Meta Title & Description - SEO Tips

By Chris Brown

Title Tags

Title tags are used to tell search engines and visitors what any given page on your site is about in the most concise and accurate way possible.

The closer to the start of the title tag a keyword is, the more likely it will be used to rank for that keyword based query.

  • 50-60 characters long, including spaces
  • Put your most important keywords first
  • Do not duplicate title tags
  • Must accurately describe the content on the page
  • Write title tags for humans (don’t keyword stuff)

Meta Description Tags

The meta description is a ~160 character snippet, or a tag in HTML, that summarises a page’s content. Search engines show the meta description in the search results and so this becomes a mini advert. Its main purpose is to get the visitor from Google to click your link. Although Google doesn’t use it to rank your page, Google does use click-through rates as part of their ranking algorithm and so having a relevant meta description does indirectly effect your page ranking.

  • 135 to 160 characters
  • Include a call-to-action
  • Match the page content
  • It should contain the focus keyword
  • The meta description should be unique
